Weekend Preview – Saturday 27th January 2024

Following two consecutive 2-0 league defeats at the hands of Purton FC and Park United, The Don have a chance to take their minds off of their bread and butter, as they take on higher league opposition in the Fountain Trophies Senior League Cup.

The visitors to Tucker Park are Larkhall Athletic Development who currently sit in eighth position of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division. this will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs, with Larkhall’s first team competing in Southern League action. The club have aspirations for their Devs to gain promotion to Step 6 football, having applied through the FA pyramid system, should a promotion place be gained in April 2024. Athletic Devs are the current holders of this competition, having completed a league and cup double, by also winning the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League First Division and gaining promotion.

The step up in division, currently see’s them sit thirteen points adrift of the three promotion places in the Premier, however they do have a couple of games in hand. So far they have managed to find the back of the net on thirty four occasions in league and cup action (28 league & 6 cup), with top scorer Thierry Swaby leading the scoring stakes with five from five outings. Coming into this tie, Athletic are also on a two game losing streak.

With this being a quarter final tie and The Don the last remaining side from Division One, we are massive underdogs and go into the tie with nothing to lose. Athletic have reached this stage of the competition with a 4-2 away win at Division One side Kintbury Rangers Reserves, then overcame Calne Town Reserves from the Premier Division 2-0. This game will be Larkhall’s third tie away from home, whilst Town will be playing their third home tie, following convincing 7-0 and 7-2 victories over Wroughton Reserves and Purton FC, fellow Division One sides.

Kick off at Tucker Park is at the earlier 13:30 with extra time and penalty kicks on offer, if the game remains equal after 90 minutes. A healthy Don following would be greatly appreciated by the squad, which see’s the returning Josh Forth, Harry Timbrell, Jack Tomes and Mitch Coombes. Adam Sly drops to the Devs to gain much needed minutes and Jamie Arlott is also missing from last weekend due to unavailability.

Squad From: Jack Gibbs, Harry Timbrell, Jack Tomes, Luke Davenport, Liam Hares, Ray Lovell, Jamie Broadfield, Pete Fletcher, Sam Leech, Will Bazen, Josh Forth, Mitch Coombes, George James, Matty Pill, Jamie Tuck, Kyle Bowyer.

The Development squads game last weekend was postponed with Witney Royals due to a frozen Tucker Park playing surface. This weekend, Robbie Harrington’s men face the daunting prospect of travelling to Moreton Rangers Reserves in the Hartwell sponsored Witney & District League Division Two. Moreton Rangers compete in the Uhlsport Hellenic Division One, with many of the W&D players having been in the first team when Town’s first team competed against them in Hellenic Division Two a number of seasons ago.

The league leaders have managed to accumulate twelve victories from thirteen league encounters, with the one defeat which came away from home in December, to current second placed side CHQ Utd, who fan out 6-2 victors. Despite this defeat, which saw them concede half of their league total conceded in the one game, are comfortably the leagues top scorers, finding the next sixty-seven occasions and conceding just twelve. One of those players is runaway goal threat, the experienced Lee Brooks with twenty one league goals from twelve appearances, whilst he is ably assisted by Callum Peters (fourteen from ten games).

Town Dev’s are currently in fourth position and similar to the first team, have a free hit to spring a surprise and come away with points. Kick off at London Road is 14:00, with directions here.

Town Dev’s kindly sponsored by J Godfrey & Son Funeral Services & Las Chicas Faringdon, their support is amazing and we can’t thank them enough.

The A Team managed to swap the venue of their Hartwell sponsored Witney & District Division Three game with Bampton United Reserves, following the frozen ground at Tucker Park. It turned out to be a difficult playing surface at Bampton, which the hosts managed to conqueror early on and raced into a 3-0 lead within the opening ten minutes. However, what followed was a goal fest, which Town unfortunately came away losing 5-7! The returning Jason Evans notched his first goal for many a season, whilst Chris Rutt managed a double alongside strikes from Kenny Mortimer-Jones and Ethan MacPherson.

Ben Stratford’s team this week make the journey to Carterton Town , with the hosts currently occupying one of the two promotion spots having clamed nine victories, four draws and just a single defeat from their fourteen league games. they have amassed forty-one goals and conceded seventeen along the way, one of which came from Louis Hegarty in a 3-1 victory for Town at Tucker Park in October. Top marksman is James Harvey with ten goals from eight league games, followed by Travis Cozier (six from eleven) and Ben Pullen (six from nine)

Kick off at Monahan Way is 14:00 and directions are here.

Town A’s a have been lucky to have had the support and sponsorship from Wessex Recovery, another trusted partner of FTFC.
