Weekend Preview – Saturday 2nd March 2024

Following last weekend’s washout, The Don are hoping the Marlborough Town playing surface holds up to the torrential downpours we have experienced this week, as they make the journey to Elcot Lane on Saturday. Kick off for this Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Division One tie is at the earlier time of 13:00. Directions to the ground are available here.

Second placed The Don sit just one place above Marlborough, who have gradually rose up the table and into the promotion places in recent weeks. However, they did slip up last weekend, when they failed to overcome a stubborn Shrivenham Development side, who gained a 1-0 home victory. The hosts are currently the divisions leading goalscorers with sixty-five goals from seventeen league matches, two more than The Don and also have the leagues top goalscorer in Jake Farrell, who has found the net twenty-four times from only fifteen appearances.

Following last weekends defeat Marlborough will be hoping to close the gap on The Don, as they currently sit eight points adrift in third position, having played the same number of league games. The two sides are yet to meet this season and The Don will be hoping to widen the gap between the top two and those challenging for promotion places below them.

Squad From: Jack Gibson, Luke Smith, Liam Hares, Ray Lovell, Harry Platt, Jamie Arlott, Sam Leech, Will Bazen, Josh Forth, Mitch Coombes, Jamie Tuck, Matty Pill, Kyle Bowyer, Jamie Broadfield.

Town Devs will be hoping to string a number of games together in the coming weeks, as they face a month of home fixtures in March, starting with the visit of Freeland FC in Hartwell sponsored Witney & District League Division Two. Kick off at Tucker Park is at 13:45.

Eighth positioned Freeland currently sit only three positions below fifth placed Town, however are sixteen points adrift, but with only two games in hand. From their total of seventeen points, they have collected five victories and two draws but tasted defeat seven times from fourteen league ties. One of those defeats was in the reverse fixture in November, when the Devs came away with a 3-2 victory courtesy of a Sam Gorham double and skipper Martyn Gatehouse’s strike. The goalscorer for Freeland that day was top-scorer Rob Frost who bagged a double, towards his eight goals scored so far in eleven league appearances.

With only one home league defeat so far this season, Robbie Harrington will be looking for his squad to keep the home winning run going and applying the pressure to the sides above them in the table and gain a promotion position by the end of the season.

Town Dev’s kindly sponsored by J Godfrey & Son Funeral Services & Las Chicas Faringdon, their support is amazing and we can’t thank them enough.

The A Team are also at home this weekend, as they look to break away from the bottom two of the Hartwell sponsored Witney & District League Division Three. Twelfth placed Town currently have fourteen points from seventeen league ties, whilst the visitors Spartan Rangers Reserves in thirteenth have twelve points from the same number of Division Three games.

Kick off at Tucker Park is 14:15 and in the reverse fixture during September, Town came away with a 2-0 victory on the road, with strikes from veterans Kenny Mortimer-Jones and Paul Smith. The visitors have struggled for goals so far, managing less than a goal game with just sixteen. They have also conceded the most of any side in the division, with sixty-eight.

A win for Town A will allow them look upwards and see them close the gap on the sides above, however with a home defeat, they will slip into the bottom two.
