Our second game of the season soon came around and after the disappointment of last week’s game the lads were keen to put this right.
We were missing 6 players from the squad this week, so it was a chance to show our strength in depth.
We started the game positively and on the front foot and while we didn’t have many clear-cut chances we were in control of the game playing some lovely football. We were solid in defence restricting Highworth to shooting from distance which never troubled Gibbo in goal.
The best chance of the half fell to Josh Forth who would have scored but for a fantastic save from the keeper.
Half time 0-0.
The second half started slowly for the Town and it took us a while to get going. Highworth came at us and started to create some chances. We defended brilliantly and started to get a grip of the game again.
The first goal came when Will Bazen found himself just outside the box on the right-hand side and hit a stunning strike into the top corner. A well-deserved goal for Will and The Town.
We grew in confidence from this and continued to limit Highworths’ chances. We pressed high and got our reward when Matt Lawrence chased down a ball over the back of Highworth’s defence, beat the defender and hit the ball into the bottom right corner. A fantastic finish.
Town saw the game out ending 2-0 and putting us top of the league until at least 5 pm Saturday.
The Advertiser Man of the Match
This was another difficult decision as it could again gone to any one of the team. Defensively we were impressive again winning everything that was thrown to us. Josh Forth and Will Bazen won the midfield battle and dominated the game, and all the strikers pressured the Highworth defence all game as well as stretching them in behind. In the end, it went to Will Bazen for a dominating midfield performance topped off with a stunning goal.
