After the previous game, we knew we needed to up it, some fresh faces in the squad and a good atmosphere meant for a good game.
The game started slowly and both teams cancelling each other out. The first chance came for Bourton, a ball straight through the middle found there forward who tried to lob our keeper but it went over. We had a good chance next when Dan Hoskin was through from some good work by Walter Brigido and Sam Roberts but the keeper saved. We were pushing forwards and forward Sam Roberts was being a handful. We forced a number of corners and through one of these Bourton cleared off the line twice to deny firstly Walter then Adam Sly.
On 25 mins we conceded against the run of play, a mistake at the back caused panic and the forward finished nicely. 1-0 down. We continued to play the better football and tried to get back on top but on 35 mins we found ourselves 2 down, again indecision at the back and clinical finishing. We were rattled at this point and nearly went 3 down but the Bourton forward wasting a good chance.
At halftime, we went in 2-0 down
We spoke about pride and how we created a couple of good chances to feel that there was still an opportunity to turn things around.
We came out and was competing all over the pitch, we forced corners again that came to nothing but no real chances. We rode our luck a couple of times but Pilly and Sly playing some nice passes and working hard, substitute Brian Ferris alongside Will Bazen were solid and steady, Dan Hoskins and Sam Roberts were a handful and causing problems and our back 5 were concentrating well.
25 mins to go we did switch off and a simple cross from the right as met by the Bourton forward who headed home with another 3 Bourton players ready to head in too. 3-0 down.
5 mins later town got the goal they deserved. Captain Pilly made a great run down the right creating space for Dan Hoskin to deliver a cross for debutant Sam Roberts to volley home after holding off two defenders. Great goal and 3-1.
We made a couple of attacking subs and continued to put Bourton under pressure, with 10 minutes remaining we got another. Sub Tom Bazen played a lovely ball down the line to Adam Sly who’s left-footed deep cross was met by Sam again who’s header was superb and went into the corner of the net. Another good goal 3-2. Bourton were backs against the wall and we continued to push right up to the last whistle but couldn’t get the third. Full time whistle and Bourton winning 3-2.
Final Score: Faringdon Town 2-3 Bourton Rovers
Overall great response going 3 down and digging deep to get two goals and make a proper game of it. Grit and determination shown was spot on. Their manager shaking hands at the end was adamant we deserved at least a point. The lads could have gave up but the desire to get back into the game was so pleasing. It was an entertaining and enjoyable game to watch just a shame we came up short again. We seem to play really well against these top sides and potentially don’t get the results we deserve but surely it’s only a matter of time. Plenty of options again for man of the match, Dan Kingsley and Josh Forth were superb at the back, Captain Pilly with another huge performance and debutant Sam Roberts two goals and being a handful.
Man of the Match: – Dan Hoskins. Set the tone with his work rate and effort, created chances and was a pain for Bourton to mark him. Didn’t stop running.
