The Vets travelled to Tilsley Park Abingdon for a top of the table clash with Marcham both teams having lost one and drawn of their games so far.
The Don got off to a slow start but soon gained the initiative and started to threaten Marcham’s goal. Smithy was getting in behind down the left flank and put in several tantalising crosses, but the Dons forwards could not get on the end of them. Robbie had a long-range curling effort, but it just cleared the angle.
The breakthrough came midway through the half from the opposite flank, a through ball saw Titch race clear of the Marcham defence and 1 on 1 with the keeper, Titch slotted home with ease. A second soon followed a sweeping move down the left found Smithy in behind again his drilled cross was met perfectly this time by Robbie smashing the ball home from 10yds.
The game could have been killed off just before halftime when Smithy was fouled in the area, but Robbie struck his penalty high over the bar however he did score three points as the ball sailed through the Iron grid goals and out of the park.
The Don soon got into their stride after the break, but they could not find that third goal as a host of chances to put the game to bed was wasted. VDM, Robbie, Smithy, Pilly all went close but no Carling. Marcham came into the game more and a bit of panic set in. Easty pulled off a great save as he tipped over a long-range effort then Marcham hit the bar and soon after the Don’s goal was breached.
A quick free-kick caught the boys napping and the ball squeezed in from a tight angle. It was now squeaky bum time when the game should have been dead and buried but that’s the way we like it!!!!!.
The back four of Glen, Westy, Daz, Bezzer stood firm with Aiden and Lino playing their part replacing Bezzer (Cheap boots) and Glen (Calf). J.J replaced Titch (battery failure) and a great shift covering every blade of grass from Dez and Pilly saw the Don climb to the top of the table.
