On Wednesday 11th April 2018, Town Vets take on Watlington Town Old Boys in the Hellenic Veterans Division One League. This match will be hosted by Fairford Town, to assist our landlords Clanfield (85) FC, who have a backlog of fixtures to clear.
The two sides are most people’s favourites to pick up the league trophy, with Town sitting in top spot on 29 points from their twelve fixtures, whilst Watlington are second, six points adrift of Town, but with two games in hand. If the first meeting between the two sides at Chinnor FC is anything to go by, this could be a fast-paced game, with some hearty challenges. Watlington will also be hoping to offer Town some payback for the 5-0 home defeat they suffered in November when a Paul Smith double and strikes from Damian Francis, Paul Hulme and Gary Sutton claimed the three points. Town know that a win would mean one more victory from their last fixture the following week, would seal the league title, whilst Watlington will see a victory as a massive step towards their title challenge with games in hand. Like Town, Watlington share their goals around the squad with eleven different scorers, Martyn Newbold being the top marksman with five goals from twelve league and cup fixtures. OB’s have scored twenty-seven and conceded nineteen goals from their ten league fixtures, whilst Town’s top goal scorers are Hulme and Smith with six goals apiece from sixteen and fifteen appearances. Town have the tightest defence in the division, conceding just thirteen goals and scoring thirty in the league, with fifteen different names on the scoresheet in league and cup fixtures. Squad news see’s Andy Lynham and Craig Gaynor miss out due to injury, but Steve Pugh and Pat Graham return following holidays.
