The Don are back in action on Saturday, with Wroughton Development the visitors to Tucker Park. Kick-off is 3.00 pm for our third Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Division One fixture of the season.
It’s a quick turnaround for the squad following Thursday night’s 2-1 away defeat to Letcombe FC, in the quarter-final of the Faringdon Thursday Memorial Cup Competition. Town’s goal from Jamie Tuck brought the side back into the game on the stroke of half time, after being on the back foot for the majority of the half. The second half was much tighter and Town probably shaded it, but couldn’t find the killer blow, whilst Letcombe took their opportunity and hold on to the final whistle.
Wroughton Devs also moved over to the league from the Uhlsport Hellenic League and will be hoping for a more successful time this season. The young squad finished at the foot of the table in 2022/2023, gaining seven points from their twenty-two league fixtures, scoring nearly a goal a game, however, they conceded 107 into the back of their net. A massive compliment to the management and young squad was their determination to complete the season, despite being on the end of some heavy defeats.
The two ties between the sides were very contrasting, played on consecutive weekends. The first game at Tucker Park was very tight, with Town eventually grabbing a 2-0 victory with both second-half goals coming from Adam Sly. The following Saturday, despite Wroughton being strengthened by a handful of first-team players, Town blew them away with an 8-0 demolition with Morgan Watts grabbing a double from the bench, matched by defender Ray Lovell’s own brace and further strikes from Jamie Broadfield, Andy Munns, Matty Pill and Sly again.
Last Saturday on the opening week of the season, Wroughton were unable to raise a side and left Kintbury Rangers Devs frustrated. However, on Tuesday they did make the journey to Devizes Town Reserves, where they were on the end of a 6-1 defeat. We look forward to welcoming Wroughton Devs to Tucker Park.
Town’s week of four games has seen that this season it does have strength in depth and each game has seen a handful of changes to the squad list, with Saturday being no different, but the ability and quality have never diminished. Saturday will see Jack Gibson, Aaron Hares, Sam Leech, Jack Tomes, Adam Sly and Pete Fletcher all come into the squad, whilst Luke Kuczynski, Mitch Coombes, Ronnie Platt, & George James are unavailable after playing Thursday evening.
