Town Vets take a break from their promotion push, with a trip to Court Farm Place, Marsh Lane, Oxford, OX3 0NQ to face Hellenic Veterans Premier Division side, Oxford City Vets in the semi-final of the Veterans Cup. The match on Wednesday 28th March 2018, kicks off at 8.00pm on their stadium state of the art FIFA PRO50 3G surface, so will go ahead whatever the weather…
Although Town are doing well in their first season, they are massive underdogs going into the tie, competing in the league below the hosts. City are currently sitting top of the Premier Division, however, they have played more games than their competitors. Their league & cup form has seen twelve wins, one draw and five defeats, they are the leading goal scorers in both divisions, scoring fifty-six goals and conceding twenty-four. Their main goal threat will be coming from Lee Bolton who has smashed twelve goals home in sixteen league and cup appearances. City go into the tie on the back of a defeat last time out, when mid-table Watlington Town Vets defeated them 2-1, two weeks ago in the league.
Town are on a run of fifteen league and cup games unbeaten, having only tasted defeat on the opening game of the season, away to Witney Royals. Town have defeated three Premier Division sides to reach the semi-final, including Thame United in the quarter-final on penalties, after drawing 2-2. Town have joint leading goal scorers in Paul Hulme and Paul Smith with six goals apiece, although Town have had fifteen different goal poachers this season. Last time out, Town grabbed a 2-2 draw at Goring United Vets in the league and will be hoping to start this match quicker. The Town squad see’s Dave Legg miss out following a recent operation, whilst Troy Redman and Iain Lawson also aren’t selected from last time out. Quarter Final match-winning penalty taker Craig Gaynor is back in the squad, along with winger Mike Marsh following absence.
All support would be greatly appreciated and we hope to see a number of supporters at the ground to give the old boys an advantage. Winners of the tie will meet Old Hooky Vets or Watlington Town Vets in the final, date & venue TBC.
