Faringdon Town FC v Clanfield (85) Dev – Match Report
After our first game win last week it was vital for us to build on it with another win. The lads were in confident mood maybe a little bit too much.
We started OK and looked good at times but with both sides canceling each other out in the opening exchanges. The first chance of the game came for Richard Evans, some great work by Christian Wills down the wing resulted in a perfect cross for Rich to pull out a scissor kick that went in bottom corner, but the linesman ruled it out for off-side. Clanfield then had a chance through a free kick that was well saved by Justin Yates.
Some good chasing by Richard Evans forced the Clanfield centre-back into a clearance that was heading for his own net, the keeper saved the ball which led to an in-direct free kick 6 yards out. The keeper was booked maybe should have been sent off. The kick was cleared off the line and a massive chance went begging. Town were getting frustrated and a few silly tackles from both sides was causing a reaction from the lads. We were getting involved with the opposition and referee. Which resulted in us not playing our football and getting involved in a dog fight!
Another silly challenge came from Clanfield’s keeper on Rich Evans in the box, stud marks on his hip! Should have been a penalty and the keeper booked for the second time. However, the ref gave nothing. A smart stop from Justin Yates saw the half time whistle. Faringdon were creating plenty of chances but couldn’t get their noses in front.

We spoke about lack of discipline and patience at half time and knew we could raise our games.
In the second half, we came out a lot more disciplined, we tried to play our football and it looked a lot better. A good chance came for Christian Wills who should have squared the ball to Rich Evans but his shot was saved. On 65 minutes town finally got themselves ahead. A free kick 25 yards out was whipped into a great area by captain Matthew Pill where Josh Forth met it with a thunderous header into the roof of the net!
Town 1-0 up. We managed to create a few other half chances but couldn’t stick it in the net.
Clanny did find the back of the net in the dying minutes but the goal was ruled out for off-side. The Don had a few nervy times towards the end, but the lads defended well and managed to see the game out.
A great start to the season with two wins and two clean sheets. The lads deserve it for the efforts they have put in over recent months. It’s down to the lads to keep this momentum going but not get carried away, along way to go but a very positive start.
