Cheltenham Saracens Res 0-4 Faringdon Town
Our first game of the season away to a new opposition, and we were looking for a good start. Both sides started quickly and it was a bit hectic, after 10 mins we settled into the game and started to play. We looked dangerous on the counter and started creating. A half chance for James Tranter came from so good play by Mike VDM but came to nothing, Cheltenham then broke and we gave away a silly free kick.
Cheltenham then broke on us again with keeper Justin Yates making a smart save. Town then had a corner taken by Christian Wills, it was whipped in and James Tranter putting his header just over the bar. Another half chance for Town created by quick feet on the edge of the box by Ryan Bradbury who then slipped the ball through to the back post where James Tranter couldn’t quite get there for a tap in. Town then took the lead on the stroke of half time, a great snap shot from Christian Wills was well saved by the opposition keeper but resulted in a corner. A quick short corner between VDM and James saw them play a lovely one two before the cross was bundled in by Christian, Town 1-0 up.
Half time – “keep on doing the good things”
“We spoke about continuing to do the good things that we had been doing and looking to put a few more in the net.”
We came our second half and looked lively 15 mins in and a deep free kick from Ryan Bradbury was un defendable and the Cheltenham defender headed into his own net. Town 2-0 up 5 mins later another free kick from Ryan found Adam Finney with a free header but it went just over the bar. Cheltenham then had a good chance themselves but for a great save from Justin Yates, Town then broke. Our midfield played some good one touch football before Adam Finney slipped substitute Richard Evans through one on one, he buried it bottom corner. Town 3-0 up and cruising
Richard Evans was now a thorn in their sides and found himself in again after some great football in our midfield, his shot found the inside of the post and came out. 5 mins before the end and a fantastic run from full back Daz Sawala saw him run the length of the pitch getting to the byline, his cross was perfect for Richard to head home his second and town to go 4-0 up. Cheltenham kept going to their credit and some good defending and sharp keeping kept our clean sheet. Well deserved.
Overall a superb start and a great performance from the squad. We have set a standard that we must keep. Our shape, discipline and patience won us the game, with some cool finishing at the right times in the game. Defensively the team worked hard throughout and deserved their clean sheet. Over the moon gents, roll on next week and so it all over again!
