The season is still very young, but after only four league fixtures The Don and Saturday’s visitors to Tucker Park, Purton FC are currently 1st and 2nd in the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Division One, with a clear points advantage over the teams below them.
Both sides have a 100% record with Town sitting top only on goal difference, having found the net eighteen times, conceding zero, whilst the Redhouse men have netted 16 times, but conceded four against them.
Purton as a club have gone through what can only be described as a rough time, with their First Team sitting bottom of the Premier Division in 2021/2022, followed by a pointless season in Division One throughout 2022/2023. The new joint-managers of Matty Bennett and Peter McGunigall, have provided the club with a massive uplift in spirits and their opening form would point to them being in with a shout of the title at the end of the season. No doubt, the biggest threat to Town will be Bennett, who last season along with midfielder Gio Wrona, were plying their trade in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division, some three leagues higher, for Royal Wootton Bassett Town. Other notable signings have been Devon Bryan who has scored numerous goals in the Wiltshire League and Wrona who started with Swindon Town and has played Southern League football as well as Hellenic for a number of seasons. Bennett and our very own Kyle Bowyer are sitting top of the goalscoring charts, Bowyer with seven from four fixtures and Bennett six from three, twice coming off the bench.
Town know they are in for a tough tie for this 3.00 pm kick-off at Tucker Park and it’s hoped the two sides can put on a competitive fixture for the Town faithful and visiting supporters of Purton. Town’s squad has shown a togetherness and willingness to win over the opening fixtures, however with the tie being on a Bank Holiday weekend, the squad will see a number of changes from the side that won 5-0 at Lambourn Sports on Tuesday evening, with Jamie Tuck, Ray Lovell and Harry Platt all unavailable.
