A midweek cup game away at Thatcham town for us this week. We seemed in good spirits and keen to get stuck in. We started well, looked sharp and organised but knew we were playing a good young, fit side. In the first ten minutes Thatcham started to get on the ball more than us and created their first chance, a ball slipped through for the striker, he rounded the keeper but his shot was saved comfortably off the line by Will Oglesby.
A wake-up call. Town then created a good chance, a long ball flicked on to Dan Hoskins was controlled well and he looked to flick it over the onrushing keeper but didn’t quite get enough on it. Town were sloppy in possession and looked second to a lot of the play, we were putting balls into good areas but weren’t putting passes together.
Thatcham were on top and had another good chance where their forward hit the bar with a header, we reacted well and cleared the danger. We did manage to put patches together and at one point showed the hunger needed in midfield to get on top of them, we created a good opportunity for James Tranter to get in behind and from where we were he was challenged strongly and it looked like a stonewall penalty! Nothing given.
Another good spell of desire created a breakaway for Christian Wills who managed to get the wrong side of his opponent and coolly slipped the ball past the Thatcham keeper, town against the run of play 1-0 up. Faringdon keeper Ryan Curtis was called into action a few more times before the end of the half and made some smart stops and smothered the ball well.
We spoke about being 1 up and not really got ourselves going, we knew we could get on the ball better and was expecting a reaction from Thatcham.
Thatcham did come out quickly and it wasn’t long until Ryan Curtis was called upon again, another couple of smart saves. We were playing a bit better than the first half and forced a couple of corners that came to nothing and were defending hard to keep our opponents at bay.
However, Thatcham’s equaliser somehow going in. A throw into the winger inside the box with a snapshot near post beating two defenders and the keeper. 1-1
5 mins later Thatcham got their second, town were caught on the counter. A good run down their left saw the winger beat our fullback, he’s pulled the ball back for the forward to tap in. It looked offside but deemed fair. Town 2-1 down
Thatcham really did have the game by the scruff of the neck and it wasn’t too long till they got their 3rd. A similar goal to their second but keeper Ryan Curtis making a great save but couldn’t deal with the follow-up. Town 3-1 down.
Thatcham’s management demanded more goals and felt they could smell blood but town showed great grit and determination to get themselves back into it. Substitute Matt Trout found captain Pilly down the left who crossed superbly for another substitute Adam Sly to slide in and score a good goal. 3-2.
Town held firm at the back and did continue to try and go forwards, a couple of free kicks to us and a couple of breaks but nothing coming of it.
Overall pleased we didn’t give up and showed great character to get back in the game. We weren’t at it and perhaps rode our luck at times but we dug deep at times and worked extremely hard. A lot of positives to take aswell as plenty still to work on, tough games to follow that will be similar affairs. Nice to see us more clinical than recently and hoping we can get on the ball a lot more in weeks to come.
Final Score: Thatcham Development 3-2 Faringdon Town
MoM: Ryan Curtis- made some important saves, reacted well to loose balls and kept us in the game at times. A really positive performance
