Town made the tough journey to top of the table Moreton after our last 3 games Town felt we had nothing to fear.
First 5 minutes the match was a bit cat and mouse, but by 15 minutes Moreton really started to step up the tempo and we were rattled. From their second chance, Moreton took the lead, a simple cross towards the penalty spot was headed against the bar by their big frontman who reacted quickest with the ball rolling and nestling into the corner. Town 1-0 down.
We had a good reaction and created a good chance to equalise, some good work on the right by Harry Platt into Christian wills who’s cross-field ball found Adam Sly, he cut the ball back 20 yards out to Elliott Day who’s first time left footed effort whistled an inch past the post.
Moreton were still on top and town were a yard off their opponents, we weren’t clearing balls properly at this stage and this led to Moretons second. A cleared ball went straight to their centre midfielder who had too much time on the edge of the box and was clinical with the finish. Town 2-0 down.
Town managed to rally and raised their games, a couple of half chances came and went, Christian with a pot shot and a good cross from Sly just grazing the head of Jason Evans. We perhaps were on top for the last ten minutes of the half but went in at 2 down.
We spoke about the ten minutes before half time and knew we could match them in the second half. We went out and were on top, we were hungry and showed a lot of fight, winning and battling for every ball as a team. Captain Pilly was showing great character and played a great left footed cross to the back post where Sly rose highest but the keeper saved. Towns best chance to get the goal back they deserved.
Town sustained this level for 20-25 minutes but couldn’t get their goal and against good sides, they will always come back into the game. Moretons first chance of the half they put in the net, town 3-0 down. Moreton then created another good chance from a quick free kick but didn’t take it. Town didn’t give up and played some great football to create a well deserved goal, Will Oglesby, Elliott, Tommy James and new signing Dan Hoskins creating a chance that substitute Ryan Bradbury took superbly, well composed and good finish.
We battled hard to get back into the game right until the end and with 2 minutes left a cross come shot from the Moreton winger catching us out and going into the back of the net. 4-1, Final whistle.
Overall pleased with our fighting attitude, showed a lot of quality at times and felt we were the better side particularly in the second half. The scoreline flattered the opposition I feel and believe that our squad isn’t far away at all. The lads were content with their days work but disappointed about the scoreline. Moreton are an experienced top side and were clinical. The two goals in the first half gave us a uphill challenge which we did take to them in the second half so proud as punch we didn’t roll over and showed great grit and determination. Superb attitude from everyone and looking to go into a tough run of games knowing we can compete against these top sides. Great effort gents, keep being hungry.
