A sloppy start to this game saw the A’s go three goals down in the first 20 miniutes. If not for a couple of important saves from the keeper Justin “Too Tall” Yates, the deficit could have been a lot worse. After 30 minutes, skipper Nick Wojcik pulled a goal back with a strike from the edge of the box. The Ardington kepper did get a hand to the ball but only to push it against his fellow defender & into the back of the net. The goal seemed to kick start the lads and the run in to half time was much tighter all over the pitch.
The A’s started the second half much better and created a couple of good chances. So it was greeted with much disappointment all round when Ardington regained their three goal advantage following more sloppy play from Faringdon. A double substitution at 4-1 down saw Sonny Smith replace Martin Key up front and player/manager John Lovegrove replace the injured Liam Farmer in the centre of midfield. Not long after the substitutions, Rob Cooper had a good run down the left and put in a low hard cross. This was well controlled by Rupert Collett on the edge of the 6 yard box, who then turned well and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to score on his debut for the A’s. At 4-2, an injury to Jason Berry saw him replaced by the ever young Trevor Sears. Trev rolled back the years and controlled the backline for the remainder of the game. With Faringdon now well and truly in the ascendancy, the deficit was reduced again when a penalty was awarded and Nick Wojcik stepped up and slotted it home. The A’s now sensed the equaliser and with 10 minutes remaining, a free kick was awarded for handball on the edge of the box. Many felt the offence was in the box but the opposition linesman manage to convince the referee it was outside! Not that it mattered anyway as Man of the Match, Nick Wojcik placed the ball down and fired in a sweet free kick over the top of the wall and into the top corner. Captain Good crack Wojcik completing his hat trick and the comeback in style. Before the end of the game, the A’s created enough chances to win it. Sonny Smith is still trying to work out how he missed an open net from two yards out!! But a defeat on Ardington would have been harsh, so a fitting result to a cracking game hopefully see’s the A’s kickstart their season.
