The Vets welcomed Premier League side Chinnor B to Clanfield (85) FC’s Radcot Road Ground, in the 2nd Group D match of this seasons Veterans Challenge Cup. The Vets went into the match on a run of three victories over Woodley Utd Vets (League 4-1), Goring Utd Vets (League 3-1) & Woodley Utd Vets (Cup 2-0), so were full of confidence.
Faringdon Town entertained Didcot Town Res in the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy, a different challenge from our previous weeks wins in the league. With the momentum we’d built-up we were keen to carry it on and felt a good result against higher league opposition was a possibility.
Town welcomed local rivals Shrivenham Reserves to Tucker Park looking to build upon their 100% start to the league campaign. The pitch was looking great before the game and the lads looked up for it during the warm-up.
Wednesday 30th of August 2017, finally game day! Thousands of WhatsApp messages had been sent (and that was just by Leggy whilst in the changing room pre-game). The squad had come through three challenging friendlies fairly unscathed, cobwebs had been blown away and the ‘bants’ (as the kids say) was in full flow.
Our first game of the season away to a new opposition, and we were looking for a good start. Both sides started quickly and it was a bit hectic, after 10 mins we settled into the game and started to play. We looked dangerous on the counter and started creating. A half chance for James Tranter came from so good play by Mike VDM but came to nothing, Cheltenham then broke and we gave away a silly free kick.
