Faringdon Town v Newent Town Res
After the positive performance, the previous week Town were looking to carry it on. The first 5 minutes Town played some good stuff, finding red shirts and looking up for it. A chance early on for Elliott Day from a fine ball from captain Matthew Pill, it went just wide. With Town creating the early pressure we were then caught out. We gave the ball away cheaply and a simple cross was headed back across goal for the Newent forward to tap in, Town 1-0 down against the run of play.
Town reacted well and within 5 minutes got their equaliser. Pilly closed the ball down, won it back and laid it into Rob Owen, he held the ball for a few seconds and clipped a great ball back post to the arriving Pilly who side foot volley into the back of the net. 1-1
For ten minutes the game fizzled out, it became slow and poor final balls were the problem. However we did raise it again, Ryan Bradbury slipped in Christian Wills who’s smart shot was well saved. Another chance created by Tommy James for Christian, he took a great touch and got himself in on goal but his chip going just wide a really good chance.
Unfortunately, the game was then stopped for ten minutes as the ref nearly passed out!
We managed to get going again and really went for it, Ryan into Pilly into Rob saw his effort saved/blocked with a scramble but Newent cleared. Town were dominating massively at this point and forced a corner. A great ball in from Christian was met by towns vice-captain Mike van de Mortel who made no mistake and bullet his header back of the net. Town 2-1 up
Another half chance for Rob Owen came and went with the infamous Faringdon bobble. A corner again created another chance and George Hegg having his header cleared off the line.
We said at halftime about being clinical and needing to take these chances. First 5 minutes after the restart, Ryan Bradbury in the left channel saw the keeper off his line and hit an audacious volley from 40 yards at a ridiculous angle, he beat the keeper and the shot on target but bounced over the bar.
The next attack Ryan should have scored, a great passing move including most of the team resulted in a fantastic cross from Will Oglesby but Ryan couldn’t steer the ball into the net, another great chance went begging. Town had another corner, this time delivered by Elliott Day who found Josh Forth, his bullet header smashing against the face of the bar. Another big chance
As is always the way, Newent went forward once and managed to get the equaliser. They drove down the channel and drove into the box getting his shot off early at the near post and managed to squeeze in. 2-2.
How would Town react…?
…superbly. Rob Owen with great composure managed to finish coolly after a chance and town went 3-2 up. The next chance we took again, a shot from James Tranter was well saved but Rob Owen didn’t switch off and followed up to tap in again. His second and Town 4-2 up.
Christian Wills found himself in space just inside the Newent half, he ran at the Newent team before turning back and playing a clever one-two with Josh Forth, from Christian’s cross James Tranter scissor volley straight in the back of the net. 5-2 up.
The last goal for Town was scored in the 88th minute, Christian straining to chase down a nothing ball, he managed to hold the ball up, drove across the byline and pulled the ball back for Rob Owen to score his hat-trick. Great goal
Final Score: Faringdon Town 6-2 Newent Town Res
Overall a great result that we deserved, we created a lot of chances and looked good in possession. The lads faced a couple of tough challenges throughout the match and showed a great reaction and huge character to come out on top and finish as strongly as we did.
It starts abit of important momentum that hopefully we can keep building on. Especially going into a local derby in next weeks game. All credit to the lads, each and every one of the squad showed a great attitude.
We had plenty of options again for man of the match, captain Pilly didn’t stop all game and used his quality and experience well.
Rob Owen with his hat trick. Will Bazen with a real solid performance.
Man of the Match: Christian Wills. Worked extremely hard for the whole game, chasing down balls in the 88th minute and creating 3 goals for the team. A refreshing performance.
