Carterton v Faringdon, Match Report – 4th November 2017
Faringdon Town went to Carterton knowing it was going to be a tough game but we’re keen to put in a performance. The pitch looked stunning and we wanted to get back to winning ways.
First 5 minutes Carterton started strongly, a corner that was volleyed side. The game then opened up and town put some good passes together. Town created a good chance for wide man Christian Wills but his shot went just over. Carterton had lots of movement and created another corner, this was headed away by Ross Packham to Christian, he controlled the ball well and ran at the defenders. He drove to the corner and put in a great cross which found captain Mike van de Mortel, he took a good touch and smashed the ball into the back of the net. Town 1-0 up.
Carterton stepped up their game and started to look dangerous when they went forward, Town weren’t dealing with the runners. Carterton had a spell of corners which were all well defended. The Don were breaking well and were awarded a free-kick. This was whipped in deep and headed back across by Josh Forth but James Tranter’s header went just over. A mistake by Towns defence allowed Carterton to get the equaliser. A good cross was well headed at the back post. 1-1.
Town created another good half chance, a long ball out to Christian who crossed, the ball headed out to James Tranter who’s shot was deflected just wide. The resulting corner was headed wide.
Town spoke at the break about being a little bit quicker and sharper as well as anticipate better. Ten minutes into the second half which Carterton started stronger Town got their second. A great run by Christian Wills saw him ghost past two or three players before his shot came back off the post to Mike VDM who tapped in coolly. Town 2-1 up.
Within 30 seconds Town nearly conceded the equaliser but did well to smother the attack. Town unfortunately gave the ball away for Carterton equaliser, the pass wasn’t on as it was too tight and was intercepted. The midfielder slipped it through to the front man who smashed it in for 2-2.
This knocked the stuffing out of Town and Carterton really started to control the game. Runners were now getting through and creating chances. Faringdons halftime talk had gone out the window as we were now second to everything and not reacting, this led to Cartertons third. A simple goal to concede through not picking up, Town 3-2 down.
Faringdon did try to get themselves back into the game and were breaking well but the ball just wasn’t being looked after well enough. A long kick from Cartertons keeper found their wide man who’s volley went straight in the top corner, great goal but Town now 4-2 down. Town kept going to the end but the ref blew his whistle and the game was done.
A serious game of two halves. Town were superb first half, looked dangerous going forwards and worked hard defensively. Second half after we allowed Carterton to get their second we looked like a beaten side. The first time this season we have conceded that amount of goals in a 45 minute period. A couple of really good individual performances but perhaps we needed a few more.
A few mistakes from the management in terms of tactics didn’t help but we know as a collective unit that the performance second half just wasn’t good enough. A lot to work on and hopefully the lads get the bit between their teeth to go again next week and get back to what we have been doing best.
Final Score: Carterton 4 – 2 Faringdon Town
Man of the Match: Josh Forth – defended superbly and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.
