Faringdon Town 0-4 Thame United –

Town faced prem side Thame Utd in the Hellenic Challenge Cup. Thame unbeaten this season and scoring goals for fun in their own league, with Town three divisions lower it was always going to be damage limitation. Town started well with good shape and a formation that was going to make them hard to break down. Faringdon had the first corner which was too deep to do anything with. Thame had a half chance that went just past the post, a header down into the ground.

On 20 minutes town went 1-0 down after giving away a penalty, a sloppy tackle in the box that was a clear cut penalty. The Thame forward made no mistake. The Don rallied and played good football again and had a good shape, Towns back line were being solid with Liam Tudway making some good tackles, centre backs Louis Bowers, Joe Clauson and Martyn Gatehouse winning their headers and tackles.

Town were looking dangerous from set pieces, a deep free kick that wasn’t cleared properly by Thame fell to captain Martyn Gatehouse who’s shot was well saved by the Thame keeper. Another free kick was stuck in deep to the far post where Towns centre backs got in each other’s way and a good chance went begging. On the stroke of half time Thame doubled their advantage, a corner was flicked on at the near post and the Thame forward had a easy header 6 yards out. Disappointing for Town, as they didn’t deserve to go in at the break at 2-0 down.

Half time 0-2

Town chatted about pride and wanting to win or not get beat in the second half. They made a change, with Robbie Harrington coming off for Richard Evans. The Don started the second half well again with good shape and winning a lot of first and second balls. They were showing a lot of discipline and made some great block tackles. Both sides evenly matched for a long period. Substitute Richard Evans was a hand full and looked sharp. A great block from centre back Martyn Gatehouse almost certainly stopped Town going 3 down.

After 30 minutes of the second half, Thame put there foot on the gas and started really putting Faringdon under pressure, 5 minutes later Thame got their third. A long range shot from the centre-back bounced on the wet grass just in front of town keeper Justin Yates who managed to block the ball, but the rebound landed kindly to the Thame striker who followed up and headed the ball home. Last 5 minutes of the game Town made a couple of silly tackles that resulted in free kicks. One of these free kicks was taken by the left back who curled the ball 25 yards out into the top corner of the goal in off the bar, great goal.

4-0. Final whistle

Manager – Darryl Curtis
Overall proud as punch of the lads for working as hard as they did and keeping the score down. For periods of the match we held our own and competed with our higher league opposition. Disappointed with the silly goals we conceded as they should have been cut out. Raised a lot of eyebrows keeping the score as low as we did and hoping the lads take this performance forwards into the next coming games against similar standard opponents to ourselves. Great effort gents.
