So it’s the final fixture of the Veterans first season of Hellenic Veterans League football on Wednesday 18th April 2018, when they entertain Benson Lions at Fairford Town FC. The Vets require just a single point from the fixture to guarantee the league title and bring home the silverware. The two sides have tried to get this match underway on two previous occasions, only to be thwarted by the ‘Beast from the East’ on both occasions.
The visitors are currently sitting in seventh position of the eight team Division One, with three victories and nine defeats from their twelve league ties. Due to the side being from the forces, fitness is never a problem and with this comes tight games. Their record of seventeen goals scored and only twenty four conceded confirms this. Top goal scorers for the Lions are Mark Leach and Samuel Parsons who have grabbed three goals a-piece. In the reverse fixture in October, the sides played out a tight 2-1 victory for Town Vets after falling behind to an early goal at Milton United. Town battled back into the game equalising before the break before grabbing a winner in the second half. Town scorers on the night were Patrick Graham and Paul Smith.
Town go into the fixture on the back of twelve league ties unbeaten and by extending it to thirteen will tie up the league title, with only Watlington Town Old Boys mathematically able to catch Town prior to kick off. The fixture will be played at Cinder Lane, London Road, Fairford, GL7 4AX kick off at 7.45pm and the lads would appreciate as much support as possible on the night.
