Faringdon Town Youth Player Gets Swindon Town Academy Trail

Faringdon Town U14s player Charlie Lawrence is currently on a 6 week trial with Swindon Town. He played his first game against Bristol Rovers on Wednesday.

Charlie has played for Faringdon Town since training with the under 8s and has been Chris Benson and Matt Pills’ first choice goalkeeper in games since starting in the league at under 9s.

He is the youngest, but easily the tallest player on the team (handy for a keeper). Charlie has always been enthusiastic about playing in goal, which helps when you’re trying to put a team together! This is his second season playing for Vales Schools Rep Team at both his age group and the age group above, he has also captained his school team.

Charlie has had contact from a number of local clubs, including Swindon Supermarine, but has always been advised to stay and play football with his friends whilst at such a young age, unless a professional club was to get in touch.

FTFC was contacted 3 weeks ago by a Swindon Town Academy scout who expressed an interest in coming to see Charlie play. He came to the game 2 days later and decided he liked what he saw.

His 2-week assessment started on 18th Sept and at the first training session/assessment, they had told him they were going to scrap the assessment and go straight to a 6-week trial.

Charlie played his first game on Wednesday night away v Bristol Rovers, winning the game 6-3, playing the first half and conceding 1 goal. He has home games against Bristol Rovers and Bournemouth coming up over the next 2 weekends.

Charlie will be a big loss to FTFC U14s but at the same time, a real ‘feather in our cap’.
Chris Benson, U14s Manager

Well done Charlie, its a proud moment for everyone at Faringdon Town, we wish you the best of luck.
